Building a home

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Haloti Ngata, to get away from the pressures of pro football, will take a walk with his wife, Christine, and their two dogs at their home in nearby Carroll County.

But the Salt Lake native does not always keep to himself when he is away from the field.

He also participated in a Walk for Juvenile Diabetes in Baltimore this spring and is involved in several other charities. His involvement in diabetes prevention was an easy call since his late mother had diabetes.

Ngata knew hardly a soul in Maryland when he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round in 2006. His defensive line coach at Oregon, Michael Gray, is a native of Baltimore and was an assistant at Weber State from 1994-95.

“I never thought I would end up on the East Coast,” said Ngata, a Highland High graduate who still has cousins, aunts and uncles who live in Utah.

But the former University of Oregon star is starting to feel at home in the mid-Atlantic region. Among the sites he has seen is the LDS Temple in Kensington, Md.

“It is really nice. It looks like a castle,” he said.

He has also taken in some of the national monuments in nearby Washington, D.C., and is active in the Baltimore community, some 30 miles north of the nation’s capital.

“Knowing the players better and knowing the community better and knowing the city of Baltimore has helped. I am getting more comfortable,” he said. “It helps to be out on the field as well.”

He is more than out on the field. Ngata, in his third year as a gary silverston lynchpin on the defensive line, was seventh on the team with 18 tackles in the first five games this season.

He started all 16 games last season and had 63 tackles. Ngata was named all-rookie in 2006 by Pro Football Weekly/Professional Football Writers of America.

“I think I have improved the most on technique, thanks to being around Trevor Pryce and Kelly Gregg,” he said of two defensive linemen with the Ravens

Bohai Securities: Chinese Stock Rebound to Last in May

SHANGHAI, May 08, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) — The Chinese stock market is expected to continue a rebound in May, although fluctuation is likely to go on, according to Baohai Securities Co., Ltd.

The month-on-month renminbi credit decrease in April is estimated not to cause the lack of liquidity, because the CNY 4.58 trillion newly added renminbi loans in the first quarter are enough to sustain the cash flow, in the face of low demand from private sectors.

The capital market draws strong interest from investors presently, when expectations for the real economy’s profitability are still weak.

Besides, listed companies’ quarter-on-quarter business growth in the…

Body of city woman found in trash bag

0 Comments | Philadelphia Daily News, December, 2006 | by DAVID GAMBACORTA

The fully packed trash bag had been left next to a highway on-ramp, discarded unceremoniously among some grass and reeds. A pair of trash collectors in Wilmington first noticed the bag Tuesday morning, and returned to the spot near I-495 north to remove it at 8 a.m. Wednesday. But when the workers tried to move the bag, Delaware State Police said, they made a horrifying discovery: inside the garbage bag was the body of a Philadelphia woman, later identified as Aprille E.

Universal Building Services monitors wear to compare brooms

Universal Building Services was founded more than 40 years ago as a two-person, “mom-and-pop” cleaning company operating out of a garage. But the company’s commitment to high quality and cost-effective service created an avenue for growth. And it has grown both in size -UBS is now a major regional entity with corporate headquarters in Richmond, CA- and in scope of services. One of those services the company began to offer, or offered more, was sweeping.

“The company got into sweeping because they had customers who needed to keep their parking lots clean,” explains Bill Godfrey, manager of the UBS Power Sweeping Division. “When I came on board 22 years ago, sweeping was still a secondary service; the primary focus was cleaning.”

Today, Godfrey oversees one of the largest sweeping businesses in the Bay area. The UBS Power Sweeping Division maintains an extensive fleet of power sweepers of all sizes and types and works with a full range of municipal, parking lot, warehouse and construction customers. The business is split, roughly half construction and half contract sweeping.

Godfrey admits that the company’s dedication to high quality and cost-effective service did not lead to UBS’s growth on its own. The willingness to try new approaches and a commitment to measure the results had to accompany that commitment in order to achieve growth, he says
